Hey gang, I've got a rig with an ASUS P5Q PRO TURBO motherboard. I've been using this setup since 2009. Since May last year I've been having a problem with the RAM; far as I can tell through hours of MemTest86+ runs and seating/swapping RAM sticks, it's not the sticks themselves that are causing. Because of the over-size cooling unit you have on the processor, I'm guessing you have those 2 - 4 GB modules in the black and gray slots furthest away from the processor, correct? They should be in the black slots closest to the processor, but obviously you can't do that. If you replace them with 8 GB modules, insert them in the gray slots. Can you leave a RAM slot empty? Yes. In fact, if you have 4 DIMMs and only 2 sticks of RAM, you most likely should alternate and leave an empty space in between. You should check the owners manual for your motherboard for more detail on RAM configuration. Don't fret if you mess it up, though… your computer will still work, just not as efficiently.

60,490. Every modern motherboard I've seen supporting dual channel and has four slots uses the slot furthest away from the CPU and the second slot from the closest to the CPU. In this case, A2 and B2, but not every board is labeled the same way. Some denote this with color coding of the DIMM slots, but this is increasingly rare these days. Additional Notes: For best performance, fill both memory slots, installing an equal memory module in each slot. The likely technical explanation here is that your MacBook (motherboard) supports dual-channel architecture and thus requires two identical memory modules. Benchmarks suggests that it gives a 5-10 percent performance boost.
